Narrative:

Departure clearance cleared me to 4000 ft. After level, we were then cleared to 8000 ft. Copilot read back the clearance to climb to 8000 ft but I didn't hear it. ATC asked if we were climbing to 8000 ft after about 1 min, we then began a climb to 8000 ft after ATC questioned our altitude. Better crew coordination would help this situation. Our airline does not have any type of training in this department. I wish all airlines fit under the same guidelines as the majors.
