Narrative:
Given clearance to descend from 14000-8000 ft -- on heading to bypass pmd and intercept V-386 to fim. Visually idented traffic on closing course. Looked about level with us or slightly below. As it got closer I was just about to ask approach if traffic was showing up on his radar. Before I could ask approach called us and in a very hurried and concerned voice he told us to climb immediately to 9000 ft. We initiated an immediate climb to 9000 ft and observed traffic passing beneath us. Possibly 1/2 mi to 1 mi lateral separation. We were switched on to burbank with no comment

Narrative: GIVEN CLRNC TO DSND FROM 14000-8000 FT -- ON HDG TO BYPASS PMD AND INTERCEPT V-386 TO FIM. VISUALLY IDENTED TFC ON CLOSING COURSE. LOOKED ABOUT LEVEL WITH US OR SLIGHTLY BELOW. AS IT GOT CLOSER I WAS JUST ABOUT TO ASK APCH IF TFC WAS SHOWING UP ON HIS RADAR. BEFORE I COULD ASK APCH CALLED US AND IN A VERY HURRIED AND CONCERNED VOICE HE TOLD US TO CLB IMMEDIATELY TO 9000 FT. WE INITIATED AN IMMEDIATE CLB TO 9000 FT AND OBSERVED TFC PASSING BENEATH US. POSSIBLY 1/2 MI TO 1 MI LATERAL SEPARATION. WE WERE SWITCHED ON TO BURBANK WITH NO COMMENT
