Narrative:

Air carrier X climbing out of decator to level at 3000 ft. Made 1000 ft call. First officer was flying. Made note of lift-off time and completed after takeoff/cruise checklist. We were also turning south to 190 degree heading (?) -- took off from runway 6. Got above clouds at 2300 ft. Also making note of flight conditions after 1000 ft call to give back to dec tower as per tower's request. Heard first officer comment on the beauty of the moon shining on the clouds. I looked right to see and noticed altitude alerter flashing. At first I thought the altitude was not set properly in the box but glanced at my altimeter on a feeling and could not believe it read 3700 ft. I immediately started descent. At this time decatur tower switched us to champaign departure. Switched to champaign and told them we were leveling at 3000 ft. No comment by decautr or champaign on climb to 3700 ft.
