Narrative:

Conditions on the ground were overcast with tops at 5500 ft. The temperature did not require anti-ice for climb out to 33000 ft MSL. The continuation of the flight above 5500 ft was conducted in clear skies with unlimited visibility. While climbing at 500 FPM at 32400 ft. We experienced an abrupt drop in fan speed accompanied by a noticeable vibration. The engine was shut down as indicated fan speed decreased. Engine shutdown checklist procedure was then completed. We had indicated oil pressure on that engine for the entire flight. After engine shutdown, we so informed ATC and requested a descent to FL240 with a change in destination to knoxville (where IFR conditions prevailed). After considering all circumstances, greensboro was selected as our destination due to the existence of VFR conditions. Engine restart was not attempted.
