Narrative:

We called for taxi clearance requesting runway 17R for departure. The ground controller responded with, 'taxi to runway 17R.' in order for full length to be available when taxiing from the west side of the field, you must cross runway 17R at intersection sierra. I assumed that when he told me to taxi to runway 17R, that he was aware that I wanted full length and that the deletion of 'hold short of runway 17R at sierra' in the initial taxi clearance that I was cleared to the end of runway 17R. I crossed runway 17R and the deviation occurred. I feel that in sits that require crossing of active runways to achieve full length for departure, that the ground controller should issue a 'hold short' clearance instead of just clearing someone to taxi. I know that would have kept me from crossing without confirmation.

Narrative: WE CALLED FOR TAXI CLRNC REQUESTING RWY 17R FOR DEP. THE GND CTLR RESPONDED WITH, 'TAXI TO RWY 17R.' IN ORDER FOR FULL LENGTH TO BE AVAILABLE WHEN TAXIING FROM THE W SIDE OF THE FIELD, YOU MUST CROSS RWY 17R AT INTXN SIERRA. I ASSUMED THAT WHEN HE TOLD ME TO TAXI TO RWY 17R, THAT HE WAS AWARE THAT I WANTED FULL LENGTH AND THAT THE DELETION OF 'HOLD SHORT OF RWY 17R AT SIERRA' IN THE INITIAL TAXI CLRNC THAT I WAS CLRED TO THE END OF RWY 17R. I CROSSED RWY 17R AND THE DEV OCCURRED. I FEEL THAT IN SITS THAT REQUIRE XING OF ACTIVE RWYS TO ACHIEVE FULL LENGTH FOR DEP, THAT THE GND CTLR SHOULD ISSUE A 'HOLD SHORT' CLRNC INSTEAD OF JUST CLRING SOMEONE TO TAXI. I KNOW THAT WOULD HAVE KEPT ME FROM XING WITHOUT CONFIRMATION.
