Narrative:

At 8000 ft and 11 mi 270 degree heading for runway 23L received clearance to 4000 ft with frequency switch. Power idle -- slats extended and full boards (airspeed) 220 KTS obviously had trouble getting down. Clear sky -- calm winds, exceeded 1000 FPM rule below 1000 ft afl. Received GPWS descent rate call on VASI at 500 ft but still fast by 30 KTS. Landed at far edge of touchdown. Could have turned off at taxiway east but did not want to jump on brakes. First officer never said a word, however both of us thought about a go around. Once we were below 100 ft with available runway considered it safer to land longer than normal than go around. Controllers must give the S80 ample room to descend even when the WX is great.
