Narrative:

Flight at 12000 ft deviating east of V378, south of mxe VOR due to thunderstorm activity along airway at approximately 35 mi north of bwi, center advised traffic inbound to bwi was stopped. They requested us to turn right for holding. We advised unable due to thunderstorm activity east of our position. Center stated R4001 was active off our left side. We advised unable right turn. We would try to make a tight left turn. During turn, center advised us to squawk 7700 as we had entered the restr area. We complied and exited approximately 1 min later and returned to normal squawk.

WE WOULD TRY TO MAKE A TIGHT L TURN. DURING TURN, CTR ADVISED US TO SQUAWK 7700 AS WE HAD ENTERED THE RESTR AREA. WE COMPLIED AND EXITED APPROX 1 MIN LATER AND RETURNED TO NORMAL SQUAWK.
