Narrative:

I was coming direct from brunswick, GA, or jekell island to knoxville, tn. I was cleared to 10000 ft. I asked for 11000 or 12000 ft. The WX was really turbulence. We were headed straight for a big thunderhead, but I could see for at least 10 mi in any direction except straight ahead. The controller said he would have a higher altitude soon. I inadvertently got too high in order to stay VFR, but the WX was blowing us around terrible. I got caught in some very turbulence WX. I should have told the controller sooner, but thought I could get around the big buildup. I didn't have radar or a storm scope and I had to try to avoid going into the thunder bumper. Next time if I get in turbulence conditions, I will tell the controller very soon, I am off altitude. The FAA is sending me a letter. They want a response soon. I'm also a crop duster. I just got through with 3 months of heavy work crop dusting in arkansas. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter states he has talked to FAA and has been directed to situation in the radar room and watch the near miss sits. Then he must go to FSDO and discuss follow-up. Analyst advised him to indicate he has filed ASRS report. He was assigned 10000 ft and climbed to 10900 ft when controller contacted him. Reporter never saw any other traffic and stated it was really clear VFR.

Narrative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
