Narrative:

During descent into yip we were cleared to descend to 5000 ft by dtw approach. As we were approaching the assigned altitude a TA was given to us with traffic at 10 O'clock (2 mi naturally our attention immediately turned to looking for the traffic and we descended through the altitude. When I heard the altitude alerter I immediately took corrective action and returned to the assigned altitude. During this time ATC was quite insistent that we communication with them regarding our altitude, assigned altitude and the issued traffic. I would suggest that if they suspect an altitude deviation (or any other deviation for that matter) that they point it out and then shut up for a min so we can resolve the problem without being distracted even further by ATC.
