Narrative:

Company required an inspection of main wheels of all aircraft after each 2 lndgs in ord. PIC observed company maintenance perform visual inspection. At that time the mechanic #1 could not record inspection in logbook, as logbook removed from airplane by other, separate mechanic #2. Mechanic #2 returned logbook, assuring PIC that aircraft was 'ok to go.' PIC assumed this meant all items signed off. After departure and out of sterile cockpit, PIC reviewed logbook and noticed mechanic #1 had not initialed visual inspection as completed. PIC contacted mechanic #1 by radio, received permission to make notation per telecon that inspection was in fact completed with no discrepancies noted. PIC did so. Upon return to base, mechanic followed up on notation by PIC and completed sign off in logbook. That flight, landing, and all succeeding flts and lndgs uneventful. In the future, both PIC and first officer will confirm all notations in logbook prior to takeoff, and not assume assurances from maintenance personnel.
