Narrative:

On climb out from smf climbing through 3000 ft MSL notices TCASII traffic on convergence course 1000 ft above us. Got a TA followed by an RA and visual sighting complied with RA and took evasive action consisting of 30 degree left aob and a descent. After our evasive action light aircraft passed by our right side 400 ft vertical and 1/4 NM horizontally. At no time prior to the RA did departure control issue a TA. Our first indication of a problem was the TCASII advisory. TCASII may very well have saved a B727 and 150 plus people!
