Narrative:

I was the flight instructor during a VOR/DME B practice approach for a full stop landing on runway 28 at mac. At the final approach fix the student (also a multi-engine rated pilot) selected gear down and approach flaps (10 degrees). We both observed 3 green lights and the nose gear down in the mirror on the engine nacelle. (Both nacelles have mirrors for observing the nose gear down on this aircraft.) on final full flaps were selected and due to gusty winds and a slight crosswind from the left a little more power was used for the approach (approximately 16 inches of manifold pressure). A final check of the gear was also made crossing the airport boundary, 3 greens observed. A normal landing was made touching down on the main wheels first when the nose gear touched the ground. It held momentarily before collapsing. The plane skidded for about 1500 ft remaining on the runway (from the centerline to the right side of the runway).

Title: SMA TWIN SUFFERS ACFT DAMAGE WHEN NOSE GEAR COLLAPSES ON LNDG PROC.

Narrative: I WAS THE FLT INSTRUCTOR DURING A VOR/DME B PRACTICE APCH FOR A FULL STOP LNDG ON RWY 28 AT MAC. AT THE FINAL APCH FIX THE STUDENT (ALSO A MULTI-ENG RATED PLT) SELECTED GEAR DOWN AND APCH FLAPS (10 DEGS). WE BOTH OBSERVED 3 GREEN LIGHTS AND THE NOSE GEAR DOWN IN THE MIRROR ON THE ENG NACELLE. (BOTH NACELLES HAVE MIRRORS FOR OBSERVING THE NOSE GEAR DOWN ON THIS ACFT.) ON FINAL FULL FLAPS WERE SELECTED AND DUE TO GUSTY WINDS AND A SLIGHT XWIND FROM THE L A LITTLE MORE PWR WAS USED FOR THE APCH (APPROX 16 INCHES OF MANIFOLD PRESSURE). A FINAL CHK OF THE GEAR WAS ALSO MADE XING THE ARPT BOUNDARY, 3 GREENS OBSERVED. A NORMAL LNDG WAS MADE TOUCHING DOWN ON THE MAIN WHEELS FIRST WHEN THE NOSE GEAR TOUCHED THE GND. IT HELD MOMENTARILY BEFORE COLLAPSING. THE PLANE SKIDDED FOR ABOUT 1500 FT REMAINING ON THE RWY (FROM THE CTRLINE TO THE R SIDE OF THE RWY).
