Narrative:

On descent from cruise altitude into buf both pilots heard ZOB controller clear us to cross dkk (dunkirk VOR) at 17000 ft and read back the clearance. Passing through FL190 the controller asked if we were going to make dkk at 11000 ft. We replied that we thought we were instructed to cross dkk at 17000 ft. The controller then had to issue vectors for continuation of our descent.
