Narrative:

Left main gear unsafe light on after retract. Later, extension was performed with unsafe condition. Visually checked gear and diverted to lax. Problem was electronics monitoring system. No suggestions on recurrence. Note: ATC cleared me to hdf, hold 160 degree radial left turns, 5 mi legs. Hdf has no DME to determine 5 mi legs, non standard turns add to workload. I expect a clearance like this on a simulator check ride to determine proficiency but when WX and traffic don't overwork controllers, I think they should not add to the overworked pilot's situation. Could have required emergency assistance, but did not
