Narrative:

Taxied beyond clearance limit (spot 3F). Realized error and stopped, but had entered taxiway J before stopping to contact ground control. We were doing a single engine taxi and the taxi progress was such that we needed to start the second engine in order to be ready to go, by the time we arrived at runway 27. I became distracted by the first officer's procedures (this was our first flight together) and simply drove past the point where we were to contact ground. The first officer was doing nothing wrong, but still got my attention. I am intimately familiar with cvg and was probably complacent in that I felt 'safe' monitoring the first officer while 100 percent of my attention should have been directed toward the safe taxi.
