Narrative:

Altitude deviation (lost approximately 800 ft in holding) while descending in holding to FL230, PF clicked off autothrottles. Then both PF and PNF went 'heads down' to find approach plates and prepared for autoland approach to runway 35R den. PNF was first 'heads up' and noticed airspeed decaying through 180 KTS and pushed up throttles and alerted PF. PF started hand- flying aircraft to recover airspeed and altitude. During recovery, as engines spooled up, aircraft pitched up, which triggered the stickshaker. Aircraft descent was stopped approximately 800 ft low and PF then regained airspeed and altitude. Remainder of flight and landing at den was uneventful.

Title: ACR FLC ALLOWS AIRSPD TO DECAY WHILE EXECUTING HOLD, STICKSHAKER ACTIVATES UPON RECOVERY FROM 800 FT ALT LOSS.

Narrative: ALTDEV (LOST APPROX 800 FT IN HOLDING) WHILE DSNDING IN HOLDING TO FL230, PF CLICKED OFF AUTOTHROTTLES. THEN BOTH PF AND PNF WENT 'HEADS DOWN' TO FIND APCH PLATES AND PREPARED FOR AUTOLAND APCH TO RWY 35R DEN. PNF WAS FIRST 'HEADS UP' AND NOTICED AIRSPD DECAYING THROUGH 180 KTS AND PUSHED UP THROTTLES AND ALERTED PF. PF STARTED HAND- FLYING ACFT TO RECOVER AIRSPD AND ALT. DURING RECOVERY, AS ENGS SPOOLED UP, ACFT PITCHED UP, WHICH TRIGGERED THE STICKSHAKER. ACFT DSCNT WAS STOPPED APPROX 800 FT LOW AND PF THEN REGAINED AIRSPD AND ALT. REMAINDER OF FLT AND LNDG AT DEN WAS UNEVENTFUL.
