Narrative:

Air carrier X on approach to an as yet unnamed runway (either sfo runway 28R or 28L) we were on a 210 degree heading for final approach to sfo. We were 10 mi from the airport and the controller had not told us which runway to expect. The controller earlier asked if we had the airport or a md-80 aircraft (11-12 O'clock) in sight. Due to the sun's low angle and haze in the area we did not call either the airport or the traffic in sight. At 2500 ft, heading over 280 degrees, we were on centerline for runway 28L (still not cleared for any approach). We saw a md-80 at 8 O'clock, approximately 100 ft above us and 500 ft to our left. We had a TCASII descend advisory at which point we deviated from our assigned altitude (2500 ft) and heading (280 degrees). We took up a heading of 260 degrees and descended to 2000 ft. After the deviation we called the field in sight and only then were we advised of our assigned runway. We then accepted a visual approach to runway 28R. Due to the close nature of the approach paths into sfo with a lack of in trail spacing, sfo is an accident waiting to happen!

Title: MULTIPLE RWY OP PARALLEL RWYS ACR X NON ADHERENCE TO ATC CLRNC HAD NMAC WITH MD80. EVASIVE ACTION TAKEN.

Narrative: ACR X ON APCH TO AN AS YET UNNAMED RWY (EITHER SFO RWY 28R OR 28L) WE WERE ON A 210 DEG HDG FOR FINAL APCH TO SFO. WE WERE 10 MI FROM THE ARPT AND THE CTLR HAD NOT TOLD US WHICH RWY TO EXPECT. THE CTLR EARLIER ASKED IF WE HAD THE ARPT OR A MD-80 ACFT (11-12 O'CLOCK) IN SIGHT. DUE TO THE SUN'S LOW ANGLE AND HAZE IN THE AREA WE DID NOT CALL EITHER THE ARPT OR THE TFC IN SIGHT. AT 2500 FT, HDG OVER 280 DEGS, WE WERE ON CTRLINE FOR RWY 28L (STILL NOT CLRED FOR ANY APCH). WE SAW A MD-80 AT 8 O'CLOCK, APPROX 100 FT ABOVE US AND 500 FT TO OUR L. WE HAD A TCASII DSND ADVISORY AT WHICH POINT WE DEVIATED FROM OUR ASSIGNED ALT (2500 FT) AND HDG (280 DEGS). WE TOOK UP A HDG OF 260 DEGS AND DSNDED TO 2000 FT. AFTER THE DEV WE CALLED THE FIELD IN SIGHT AND ONLY THEN WERE WE ADVISED OF OUR ASSIGNED RWY. WE THEN ACCEPTED A VISUAL APCH TO RWY 28R. DUE TO THE CLOSE NATURE OF THE APCH PATHS INTO SFO WITH A LACK OF IN TRAIL SPACING, SFO IS AN ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN!
