Narrative:

We were cleared heading 160 degrees (base leg) descend and maintain 4000 ft. We were north of field for a right base to runway 25L. We were crossing over traffic landing runway 24R. Approaching 4000 ft we received a TA with instructions to climb. Controller said he had cleared us to 5000 ft. We were about 4800 ft when clear of traffic and then turned a slow final for visual to runway 25L. I believe, the sole problem was that the controller did not realize that he had cleared us to 4000 ft.
