Narrative:

My first officer and I were taxiing for runway 1R departure at mci. My first officer had completed the passenger briefing so I transferred control of the aircraft to him. My first officer was somewhat distracted because his headset was broken. I began running the checklist. Because it was dark I had to use pilot map light under the yoke. When I looked up I had realized we had crossed the runway threshold lines. I immediately resumed control of the aircraft. Since there were no aircraft behind us I did a 180 and cleared the runway. Miscellaneous contributing factors: runway hold short sign not illuminated.
