Narrative:

Flight was issued a cruise clearance from pni to tkk and a through clearance tkk - gum with a void time of XA40 GMT out of tkk - we were told to report landing in tkk. After landing first officer repeatedly tried to communication with hnl commercial radio on HF on all frequency but was unable to make contact with them. We took off from tkk at XA22 (GMT) before our void time and so was able after 10 mins to raise hnl commercial radio for a departure report. Oak center advised us that they had not received our landing report in tkk and had contacted gum center to find out about flight. As far as we know, sar was not initiated. This seems to be a recurrent problem on some of the remote islands of the pacific - propagation time and location play havoc with HF communication. Several times long distance phone calls have to made to oak center to get a clearance, in this day and age we should have better means of communication than HF. I look forward to sat communication for all airlines. A possible way to improve this so that it does not recur would be for tkk operations to relay via telex our company in guam which in turn would relay to ATC in guam which would relay to oak center.

Title: AN ACR LGT CREW WAS UNABLE TO COM WITH COMMERCIAL RDO ON THE GND AT TKK.

Narrative: FLT WAS ISSUED A CRUISE CLRNC FROM PNI TO TKK AND A THROUGH CLRNC TKK - GUM WITH A VOID TIME OF XA40 GMT OUT OF TKK - WE WERE TOLD TO RPT LNDG IN TKK. AFTER LNDG FO REPEATEDLY TRIED TO COM WITH HNL COMMERCIAL RADIO ON HF ON ALL FREQ BUT WAS UNABLE TO MAKE CONTACT WITH THEM. WE TOOK OFF FROM TKK AT XA22 (GMT) BEFORE OUR VOID TIME AND SO WAS ABLE AFTER 10 MINS TO RAISE HNL COMMERCIAL RADIO FOR A DEP RPT. OAK CTR ADVISED US THAT THEY HAD NOT RECEIVED OUR LNDG RPT IN TKK AND HAD CONTACTED GUM CTR TO FIND OUT ABOUT FLT. AS FAR AS WE KNOW, SAR WAS NOT INITIATED. THIS SEEMS TO BE A RECURRENT PROB ON SOME OF THE REMOTE ISLANDS OF THE PACIFIC - PROPAGATION TIME AND LOCATION PLAY HAVOC WITH HF COM. SEVERAL TIMES LONG DISTANCE PHONE CALLS HAVE TO MADE TO OAK CTR TO GET A CLRNC, IN THIS DAY AND AGE WE SHOULD HAVE BETTER MEANS OF COM THAN HF. I LOOK FORWARD TO SAT COM FOR ALL AIRLINES. A POSSIBLE WAY TO IMPROVE THIS SO THAT IT DOES NOT RECUR WOULD BE FOR TKK OPS TO RELAY VIA TELEX OUR COMPANY IN GUAM WHICH IN TURN WOULD RELAY TO ATC IN GUAM WHICH WOULD RELAY TO OAK CTR.
