Narrative:

On pushback, we got an EICAS message on screen 'elev left hydraulic.' we pushed into the alley between terminals 1 and 2 in lax. We advised the pushback crew, who under company policy are flight mechanics. The pushback continued to our stop position in the alley. The mechanic in control of our pushback advised us to cycle the flaps to full down position and then full up. We accomplished this and the EICAS message remained on. The mechanic advised us to get clearance to the gate which I did. Tower asked for reason and I advised a possible mechanical problem with flaps. The tower acknowledged and as we were about to return to the gate, the EICAS message dropped out. We advised the mechanic, he asked us to check recall, which we did, and the screen remained blank. The mechanic thought we were ok and didn't need a writeup. We advised ground control that we were ready for taxi. No message occurred the rest of the flight.
