Narrative:

Took off from runway 16L with clearance to 8000 ft. Began right turn to 280 degrees. After raising gear and while retracting flaps, saw something flash by the landing lights followed immediately by a very loud thump. Cleaned up flaps and continued climb while analyzing the situation. Engine instruments were all normal and aircraft control was also normal. Concluded that it was a bird strike and returned to slc. Air carrier maintenance inspected and cleaned aircraft (feathers and blood on radome, windshield, flap/slat tracks). Flight took off again and flew uneventfully to calgary.
