Narrative:

VFR flight from amw to spw. Did not check NOTAMS. Transmitted intentions 3 times on unicom of intention to land on runway 30. At 3 mi noticed men and equipment on runway and observed all clear runway by 1/2 mi on final. Landed and did not observe yellow X at approach end. When attempting to takeoff an hour later on the same runway, the files composing the yellow X were observed but they were so faded as to blend into the pavement color. At this time unicom transmitted that the runway was closed. Had the men and equipment not cleared the runway on landing, there would have been no danger as I would have changed runways. However, the yellow X should not be used unless maintained as a visible marking.
