Narrative:
Chose to abort long distance ferry flight of small aircraft sel to chile due to maintenance problem. Returned to united states to secure proper maintenance. Upon placing aircraft into inspection, mechanic noticed that the annual and some minor modifications to landing gear was performed by chilean maintenance facility. This work was done in accordance with chilean and ICAO standards, but the FAA does not recognize chilean maintenance certificates. This makes the airplane unairworthy in the united states. I have placed the airplane into maintenance and an annual is now being performed.

Title: A UNITED STATES REGISTERED SMA SEL ACFT WAS GNDED SINCE IT DID NOT HAVE A CURRENT UNITED STATES ANNUAL INSPECTION.
Narrative: CHOSE TO ABORT LONG DISTANCE FERRY FLT OF SMA SEL TO CHILE DUE TO MAINT PROB. RETURNED TO UNITED STATES TO SECURE PROPER MAINT. UPON PLACING ACFT INTO INSPECTION, MECH NOTICED THAT THE ANNUAL AND SOME MINOR MODIFICATIONS TO LNDG GEAR WAS PERFORMED BY CHILEAN MAINT FACILITY. THIS WORK WAS DONE IN ACCORDANCE WITH CHILEAN AND ICAO STANDARDS, BUT THE FAA DOES NOT RECOGNIZE CHILEAN MAINT CERTIFICATES. THIS MAKES THE AIRPLANE UNAIRWORTHY IN THE UNITED STATES. I HAVE PLACED THE AIRPLANE INTO MAINT AND AN ANNUAL IS NOW BEING PERFORMED.
