Narrative:

Captain flying using AFDS. Moderate rain, light chop at 6000 ft. GPWS 'terrain, climb, climb' began and persisted for 30 seconds. Captain disengaged autoplt and climbed to 7300 ft MSL before warnings ceased. I immediately advised ATC we were in emergency climb. ATC advised 'return to 6000 ft when able.' this month's air carrier magazine contained article advising of possible GPWS alerts in moderate to heavy rain! I read this article 3 days after incident. I believe we responded appropriately since we were in IMC and GPWS warning was continuous.
