Narrative:

On flight from mem to stl aug/xx/93, FAA inspector on board giving line check. FAA inspector was briefed on additional crew member procedures to include helping us watch for traffic and any factors that might effect the safety of the flight. After passing 10000 ft on course and climbing, the FAA inspector asked the captain what heading departure gave us after takeoff? Captain said 110 degrees. I said 110 degrees. The inspector said ATC told us 010 degrees, and he would check the tape when he returned to mem. If we did hear and read back the wrong heading, why did he allow the error to go uncorrected? Why did he not speak up? He was an additional crew member asked to help us! Actions/inactions/human factors: if the FAA inspectors would help, instead of trying to violate and intimidate, we would have a better rapport with the FAA and flight safety would be improved by using all available resources in the cockpit!
