Narrative:

I was given the oasis 7 departure, beaty transition, from las vegas, nv, mccarran field, departing runway 19L. When I reviewed the departure procedure after receiving my clearance, I read the narrative of the wrong SID and looked at the graphic of the appropriate departure. When I departed I flew the procedure for the SID that I had read and not the SID I was cleared for. The error was idented when after completing a turn to the north, incorrectly, the departure controller requested my heading. He then instructed me to make an immediate turn to a 250 degree heading and comply with the SID. After his instruction to change headings he commented on the routing that I should have been using. I assumed the new heading, complied with the remainder of the SID, and continued without further incident. The mistake I made was primarily human but aggravated by poorly displayed procedures. The nos charts for departure procedures that require 2 pages, display the graphic on one page and the narrative on a succeeding page. When I opened the chart book to the oasis 7 departure, the narrative of the preceding procedure seemed to lead to the oasis 7 graphic. I think the continuation of a procedure should be displayed in a more recognizable manner.

Title: CORP PLT HAS HDG DEV WHEN MIXING NARRATIVE AND GRAPHIC PARTS OF DEP.

Narrative: I WAS GIVEN THE OASIS 7 DEP, BEATY TRANSITION, FROM LAS VEGAS, NV, MCCARRAN FIELD, DEPARTING RWY 19L. WHEN I REVIEWED THE DEP PROC AFTER RECEIVING MY CLRNC, I READ THE NARRATIVE OF THE WRONG SID AND LOOKED AT THE GRAPHIC OF THE APPROPRIATE DEP. WHEN I DEPARTED I FLEW THE PROC FOR THE SID THAT I HAD READ AND NOT THE SID I WAS CLRED FOR. THE ERROR WAS IDENTED WHEN AFTER COMPLETING A TURN TO THE N, INCORRECTLY, THE DEP CTLR REQUESTED MY HDG. HE THEN INSTRUCTED ME TO MAKE AN IMMEDIATE TURN TO A 250 DEG HDG AND COMPLY WITH THE SID. AFTER HIS INSTRUCTION TO CHANGE HDGS HE COMMENTED ON THE ROUTING THAT I SHOULD HAVE BEEN USING. I ASSUMED THE NEW HDG, COMPLIED WITH THE REMAINDER OF THE SID, AND CONTINUED WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. THE MISTAKE I MADE WAS PRIMARILY HUMAN BUT AGGRAVATED BY POORLY DISPLAYED PROCS. THE NOS CHARTS FOR DEP PROCS THAT REQUIRE 2 PAGES, DISPLAY THE GRAPHIC ON ONE PAGE AND THE NARRATIVE ON A SUCCEEDING PAGE. WHEN I OPENED THE CHART BOOK TO THE OASIS 7 DEP, THE NARRATIVE OF THE PRECEDING PROC SEEMED TO LEAD TO THE OASIS 7 GRAPHIC. I THINK THE CONTINUATION OF A PROC SHOULD BE DISPLAYED IN A MORE RECOGNIZABLE MANNER.
