Narrative:

While cruising on a VFR flight from kissimmee, fl, to dayton, tn, at 8500 ft, as I approached atl, GA, from the southeast, I called approximately 38 mi, DME, out to obtain clearance through atl TCA. Atl approach gave me another frequency. I switched over and obtained transponder frequency. About this time ATC said I was 18 mi out, gave me a new heading to steer, asked my name and pilot's license number and handed me over to controller on north side of atl airport who asked me to call atl TCA upon landing. I called atl and explained to the gentleman that my DME was incorrect. I apologized and told them I would have it corrected immediately. I have flown this route for 40 yrs, don't want to create problems for atl ATC.
