Narrative:

We received aircraft from an inbound crew. We were operating flight from ewr to pwm. After pushback from the gate we were waiting taxi clearance when the captain pulled down the standby compass to check headings when we taxied. We noticed that the standby compass was missing from the bracket. We notified maintenance and returned to the gate. In our flight manual the standby compass is checked on the receiving aircraft check and again on the taxi check. It is not usually checked at the gate because of the ground equipment and jetway possibly effecting the compass.

Title: CAPT OF AN MLG ACR ACFT RETURNED TO GATE TO HAVE A MISSING STANDBY COMPASS INSTALLED.

Narrative: WE RECEIVED ACFT FROM AN INBOUND CREW. WE WERE OPERATING FLT FROM EWR TO PWM. AFTER PUSHBACK FROM THE GATE WE WERE WAITING TAXI CLRNC WHEN THE CAPT PULLED DOWN THE STANDBY COMPASS TO CHK HDGS WHEN WE TAXIED. WE NOTICED THAT THE STANDBY COMPASS WAS MISSING FROM THE BRACKET. WE NOTIFIED MAINT AND RETURNED TO THE GATE. IN OUR FLT MANUAL THE STANDBY COMPASS IS CHKED ON THE RECEIVING ACFT CHK AND AGAIN ON THE TAXI CHK. IT IS NOT USUALLY CHKED AT THE GATE BECAUSE OF THE GND EQUIP AND JETWAY POSSIBLY EFFECTING THE COMPASS.
