Narrative:
We were level at 11000 ft and given known VFR traffic at 10500. TCASII was showing the traffic and at 3 mi gave us an RA to climb and monitor vertical speed. We tried to visually pick up the traffic but couldn't so a climb was initiated and ATC was advised. We climbed to 11500 and after clear of traffic returned to 11000. ATC later questioned our action, however, without visual contact, a climb must be initiated.
