Narrative:

I had approved my student for a cross country flight from fmn to gjt and return, with lndgs at gjt and fmn. The WX called for moderate to severe turbulence, with reports at gjt of virga. Turbulence is a normal event here in farmington and no flts are cancelled at our school because of turbulence. We discussed what my student should do if the WX was bad at gjt. He said he would turn around and come back. That afternoon I knew the student had turned around and come back because the WX indeed was bad at gjt. I was on another flight and observed his landing at fmn, which was a bad landing. Today, jul/xx/93, I debriefed him. He said he got scared when he got close to gjt because of rain activity. He said he was still scared when he returned, and just wanted to get back on the ground, hence the bad landing. He went on to tell me that he diverted to cortez and came back to farmington. He also told me that he made a touch-and-go landing at cortez. I told him I did not authorize any lndgs at cortez in my endorsement for this particular cross country, only from fmn to gjt and return. I told him he should have returned directly to fmn. I approved another cross country for him today, and wrote very specifically in the endorsement, above and beyond the recommended FAA advisory circular signoff, which airports he is authorized to land on. This particular student has ability, but I have had difficulties making him understand as long as he is riding on my signoffs that I am running the show. Because of the attitude promoting an independent, competitive attitude among students and, in my opinion, not having enough authority over my students and also being under much of the pressure students are under for them to complete their courses, I will not continue my employment at this school and have resigned to accept another position.

Title: STUDENT PLT ON A SOLO XCOUNTRY LANDS AT AN UNAUTH ARPT.

Narrative: I HAD APPROVED MY STUDENT FOR A XCOUNTRY FLT FROM FMN TO GJT AND RETURN, WITH LNDGS AT GJT AND FMN. THE WX CALLED FOR MODERATE TO SEVERE TURB, WITH RPTS AT GJT OF VIRGA. TURB IS A NORMAL EVENT HERE IN FARMINGTON AND NO FLTS ARE CANCELLED AT OUR SCHOOL BECAUSE OF TURB. I WAS ON ANOTHER FLT AND OBSERVED HIS LNDG AT FMN, WHICH WAS A BAD LNDG. TODAY, JUL/XX/93, I DEBRIEFED HIM. HE SAID HE GOT SCARED WHEN HE GOT CLOSE TO GJT BECAUSE OF RAIN ACTIVITY. HE SAID HE WAS STILL SCARED WHEN HE RETURNED, AND JUST WANTED TO GET BACK ON THE GND, HENCE THE BAD LNDG. HE WENT ON TO TELL ME THAT HE DIVERTED TO CORTEZ AND CAME BACK TO FARMINGTON. HE ALSO TOLD ME THAT HE MADE A TOUCH-AND-GO LNDG AT CORTEZ. I TOLD HIM I DID NOT AUTHORIZE ANY LNDGS AT CORTEZ IN MY ENDORSEMENT FOR THIS PARTICULAR XCOUNTRY, ONLY FROM FMN TO GJT AND RETURN. I TOLD HIM HE SHOULD HAVE RETURNED DIRECTLY TO FMN. I APPROVED ANOTHER XCOUNTRY FOR HIM TODAY, AND WROTE VERY SPECIFICALLY IN THE ENDORSEMENT, ABOVE AND BEYOND THE RECOMMENDED FAA ADVISORY CIRCULAR SIGNOFF, WHICH ARPTS HE IS AUTHORIZED TO LAND ON. THIS PARTICULAR STUDENT HAS ABILITY, BUT I HAVE HAD DIFFICULTIES MAKING HIM UNDERSTAND AS LONG AS HE IS RIDING ON MY SIGNOFFS THAT I AM RUNNING THE SHOW. BECAUSE OF THE ATTITUDE PROMOTING AN INDEPENDENT, COMPETITIVE ATTITUDE AMONG STUDENTS AND, IN MY OPINION, NOT HAVING ENOUGH AUTHORITY OVER MY STUDENTS AND ALSO BEING UNDER MUCH OF THE PRESSURE STUDENTS ARE UNDER FOR THEM TO COMPLETE THEIR COURSES, I WILL NOT CONTINUE MY EMPLOYMENT AT THIS SCHOOL AND HAVE RESIGNED TO ACCEPT ANOTHER POS.
