Narrative:

Flight received clearance from sju center approximately XA05Z and told to 'hold for release and call when ready.' at XA10Z flight called sju center and informed center we were ready for takeoff. Sju center replied 'roger.' flight was monitoring unicom, reported taking off on unicom at XA11Z. Flight took off VFR, called airborne on unicom, then contacted sju center. Sju cleared flight to FL310. A few mins later sju center said they showed us on a 'hold for release.' we responded we called for takeoff and received a 'roger.' center stated the clearance was not forwarded on his paperwork, that the first controller must have forgotten, and that it was no problem. Due to the confusion, the crew decided a NASA safety report was appropriate.
