Narrative:

TCASII near miss: ATC descended us to 3000 ft MSL (2400 ft AGL) way south of airport (20-30 NM). TCASII showed climbing traffic (with alert) 700 ft below us which turned to an RA 'monitor vertical speed' followed by climb command. Rapid climb was initiated with closest encounter noted to be 400 ft. Maximum altitude reached was approximately 4000 ft. We were descended too low, too far out and in the vicinity of another airport with a lot of traffic. Supplemental information from acn 242080: ATC was advised by us of the situation. They acknowledged but did not comment (no TA was issued by ATC).
