Narrative:

Air carrier X at FL280 requested FL350 in close proximity to air carrier Y at FL310. Air carrier X was vectored west and climbed to FL330. Air carrier X was given direct mol when he was northwest of air carrier Y. When I noticed him cutting back harder than anticipated, I issued a vector to the right to air carrier X and a vector to the left for air carrier Y prior to conflict alert. Separation was still lost.
