Narrative:

While cruising at FL290, traffic was reported to be at 11 O'clock, climbing to FL280. TCASII issued a TA then RA with command to climb. Initiated a climb to 29450 ft, then monitored vertical speed per TCASII. Descended back to FL290. ATC was advised of the climb. ATC then replied that crossing traffic leveled at FL280 and there was no conflict. Software problems with TCASII need to be fixed. If there had been crossing traffic above our aircraft, a conflict would have been created for no reason.

Title: TCASII SENSED A NONEXISTENT CONFLICT AND CAUSED MLG TO DEVIATE 450 FT ABOVE ASSIGNED ALT.

Narrative: WHILE CRUISING AT FL290, TFC WAS RPTED TO BE AT 11 O'CLOCK, CLBING TO FL280. TCASII ISSUED A TA THEN RA WITH COMMAND TO CLB. INITIATED A CLB TO 29450 FT, THEN MONITORED VERT SPD PER TCASII. DSNDED BACK TO FL290. ATC WAS ADVISED OF THE CLB. ATC THEN REPLIED THAT XING TFC LEVELED AT FL280 AND THERE WAS NO CONFLICT. SOFTWARE PROBS WITH TCASII NEED TO BE FIXED. IF THERE HAD BEEN XING TFC ABOVE OUR ACFT, A CONFLICT WOULD HAVE BEEN CREATED FOR NO REASON.
