Narrative:

We were instructed to cross mugzy intersection at 6000 ft. Descent was planned and carried out accordingly. On passing 18000 altitude was set to 30.69, which was the setting the copilot had written on the landing data card after listening to ATIS. Controller asked us our altitude and stated that we were reporting 4900 ft. Copilot replied we were indicating 6000. I told him to confirm the altimeter with center. Center stated altimeter as 29.71. We reset altimeters, noted 5000 MSL and immediately climbed back to 6000. Contributing factors: 1. Copilot has evidenced hearing problems. 2. These are aggravated by noise of windshield heat during descent. 3. Because of 1 and 2 copilot did not hear ATIS information correctly.

Title: CPR LTT USES WRONG ALTIMETER SETTING. ALTDEV.

Narrative: WE WERE INSTRUCTED TO CROSS MUGZY INTXN AT 6000 FT. DSCNT WAS PLANNED AND CARRIED OUT ACCORDINGLY. ON PASSING 18000 ALT WAS SET TO 30.69, WHICH WAS THE SETTING THE COPLT HAD WRITTEN ON THE LNDG DATA CARD AFTER LISTENING TO ATIS. CTLR ASKED US OUR ALT AND STATED THAT WE WERE RPTING 4900 FT. COPLT REPLIED WE WERE INDICATING 6000. I TOLD HIM TO CONFIRM THE ALTIMETER WITH CTR. CTR STATED ALTIMETER AS 29.71. WE RESET ALTIMETERS, NOTED 5000 MSL AND IMMEDIATELY CLBED BACK TO 6000. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS: 1. COPLT HAS EVIDENCED HEARING PROBS. 2. THESE ARE AGGRAVATED BY NOISE OF WINDSHIELD HEAT DURING DSCNT. 3. BECAUSE OF 1 AND 2 COPLT DID NOT HEAR ATIS INFO CORRECTLY.
