Narrative:

PIC did not review information in current AFD about destination airport prior to flight. Instead, PIC assumed that FSS ft worth WX briefer would advise pilot of a closed airport reported as destination airport during standard WX briefing with NOTAMS requested. No mention of closed airport was reported by briefer during preflight WX briefing. Upon fly over at destination airport, PIC noted a yellow 'X' on the dirt area beyond the end of the one and only runway. PIC then climbed to a safe holding altitude and contacted nearest FSS (montgomery county). FSS informed PIC that livingston municipal (00R) was closed indefinitely. Upon receipt of information, PIC chose alternate airport for landing: lufkin -- angelina county (lfk). Upon landing at lufkin, PIC attempted to obtain ground transportation. After contacting 4 rental car agencies, we found that no vehicles were available. PIC then contacted local livingston FBO, by phone. Representative, mr. X, convinced PIC that it was ok to land at livingston, runway had recently been repaved but the runway was open for use. Upon hearing this and have no other known option for transportation to livingston, PIC departed angelina county bound for livingston municipal. Upon landing and deplaning at livingston municipal, PIC was confronted by construction superintendent stating that the airport was closed. From there, PIC walked to FBO to discuss the situation with mr. X. This conversation confirmed that PIC might have trusted the wrong person for information concerning the closed runway. A lesson learned the wrong way -- by own mistake.

Title: SMA LANDS ON CLOSED ARPT.

Narrative: PIC DID NOT REVIEW INFO IN CURRENT AFD ABOUT DEST ARPT PRIOR TO FLT. INSTEAD, PIC ASSUMED THAT FSS FT WORTH WX BRIEFER WOULD ADVISE PLT OF A CLOSED ARPT RPTED AS DEST ARPT DURING STANDARD WX BRIEFING WITH NOTAMS REQUESTED. NO MENTION OF CLOSED ARPT WAS RPTED BY BRIEFER DURING PREFLT WX BRIEFING. UPON FLY OVER AT DEST ARPT, PIC NOTED A YELLOW 'X' ON THE DIRT AREA BEYOND THE END OF THE ONE AND ONLY RWY. PIC THEN CLBED TO A SAFE HOLDING ALT AND CONTACTED NEAREST FSS (MONTGOMERY COUNTY). FSS INFORMED PIC THAT LIVINGSTON MUNICIPAL (00R) WAS CLOSED INDEFINITELY. UPON RECEIPT OF INFO, PIC CHOSE ALTERNATE ARPT FOR LNDG: LUFKIN -- ANGELINA COUNTY (LFK). UPON LNDG AT LUFKIN, PIC ATTEMPTED TO OBTAIN GND TRANSPORTATION. AFTER CONTACTING 4 RENTAL CAR AGENCIES, WE FOUND THAT NO VEHICLES WERE AVAILABLE. PIC THEN CONTACTED LCL LIVINGSTON FBO, BY PHONE. REPRESENTATIVE, MR. X, CONVINCED PIC THAT IT WAS OK TO LAND AT LIVINGSTON, RWY HAD RECENTLY BEEN REPAVED BUT THE RWY WAS OPEN FOR USE. UPON HEARING THIS AND HAVE NO OTHER KNOWN OPTION FOR TRANSPORTATION TO LIVINGSTON, PIC DEPARTED ANGELINA COUNTY BOUND FOR LIVINGSTON MUNICIPAL. UPON LNDG AND DEPLANING AT LIVINGSTON MUNICIPAL, PIC WAS CONFRONTED BY CONSTRUCTION SUPERINTENDENT STATING THAT THE ARPT WAS CLOSED. FROM THERE, PIC WALKED TO FBO TO DISCUSS THE SIT WITH MR. X. THIS CONVERSATION CONFIRMED THAT PIC MIGHT HAVE TRUSTED THE WRONG PERSON FOR INFO CONCERNING THE CLOSED RWY. A LESSON LEARNED THE WRONG WAY -- BY OWN MISTAKE.
