Narrative:

On the morning of the 4TH, I was instructed to perform a test flight on aircraft with captain X to test the shimmy dampener of the nose gear of the mdt. Upon reaching the aircraft, I performed the preflight inspection and proceeded to the flight deck to complete my preflight duties. A company mechanic was in the jumpseat to observe the test flight. As I was continuing my preflight duties, the captain reached up and depressed the start button for #2 engine. At this point, I realized the captain did not intend to perform the before starting checklist. With the intention to read and complete the checklist myself, I reached for the checklist and continued to proceed with the items. My head was down performing the checklist when I heard 'brakes, brakes.' the aircraft rolled forward approximately 3 ft and struck the gpu. A small hole, the size of a quarter was pierced in the fuselage on the right side just behind the nose cone. The parking brake had not been set appropriately as called for by the before starting checklist. Maintenance had released the flight and taxied the aircraft to the ramp for our test flight and hence the parking brake was not set as is normal when parking the aircraft.
