Narrative:

On climb out departure advised small aircraft traffic at 12 O'clock 8 mi 5500 ft. Not in sight. Shortly after, departure advised same traffic 11 O'clock 6 mi 5500 ft. We were cleared up to 10000 ft. Departure advised small aircraft at 11 O'clock 2 mi. Still not in sight. 10-15 seconds later we sighted small aircraft at our altitude (approximately 5000-5500 MSL) about 1/4 mi off our left side. Neither aircraft reported seeing the other until passing. Had we been 1/4 mi over, we would have hit the other aircraft. I believe the controller was in error for not assigning diverging headings or stopping our climb until traffic sighted. I don't believe we were protected at all except by luck.

Title: POTENTIAL CONFLICT BTWN ARR DEP OPPOSITE DIRECTION TFC.

Narrative: ON CLBOUT DEP ADVISED SMA TFC AT 12 O'CLOCK 8 MI 5500 FT. NOT IN SIGHT. SHORTLY AFTER, DEP ADVISED SAME TFC 11 O'CLOCK 6 MI 5500 FT. WE WERE CLRED UP TO 10000 FT. DEP ADVISED SMA AT 11 O'CLOCK 2 MI. STILL NOT IN SIGHT. 10-15 SECONDS LATER WE SIGHTED SMA AT OUR ALT (APPROX 5000-5500 MSL) ABOUT 1/4 MI OFF OUR L SIDE. NEITHER ACFT RPTED SEEING THE OTHER UNTIL PASSING. HAD WE BEEN 1/4 MI OVER, WE WOULD HAVE HIT THE OTHER ACFT. I BELIEVE THE CTLR WAS IN ERROR FOR NOT ASSIGNING DIVERGING HDGS OR STOPPING OUR CLB UNTIL TFC SIGHTED. I DON'T BELIEVE WE WERE PROTECTED AT ALL EXCEPT BY LUCK.
