Narrative:

Night VFR taxi from gate X (cle) to runway 5R. Ground controller instructions were taxi romeo to taxiway lima, hold short of runway 5R at november. I (captain) taxied out on romeo while first officer did the checklist. We missed the turn off taxiway romeo to taxiway lima, but caught our mistake and stopped short of runway 5R/23L. At about the same time, the ground controller noticed our mistake and told us to make a right turn to get back to taxiway lima. He proceeded to tell an aircraft on final to 5R to go around. We continued our taxi without further problems. I believe the area where taxiway lima and taxiway romeo, along with runway 36/18 and runway 5R/23L, intersect is very confusing and needs better markings during night operations and during marginal visibility.

Title: AN ACR MLG CROSSED A HOLD SHORT LINE WHILE TAXIING.

Narrative: NIGHT VFR TAXI FROM GATE X (CLE) TO RWY 5R. GND CTLR INSTRUCTIONS WERE TAXI ROMEO TO TXWY LIMA, HOLD SHORT OF RWY 5R AT NOVEMBER. I (CAPT) TAXIED OUT ON ROMEO WHILE FO DID THE CHKLIST. WE MISSED THE TURN OFF TXWY ROMEO TO TXWY LIMA, BUT CAUGHT OUR MISTAKE AND STOPPED SHORT OF RWY 5R/23L. AT ABOUT THE SAME TIME, THE GND CTLR NOTICED OUR MISTAKE AND TOLD US TO MAKE A R TURN TO GET BACK TO TXWY LIMA. HE PROCEEDED TO TELL AN ACFT ON FINAL TO 5R TO GAR. WE CONTINUED OUR TAXI WITHOUT FURTHER PROBS. I BELIEVE THE AREA WHERE TXWY LIMA AND TXWY ROMEO, ALONG WITH RWY 36/18 AND RWY 5R/23L, INTERSECT IS VERY CONFUSING AND NEEDS BETTER MARKINGS DURING NIGHT OPS AND DURING MARGINAL VISIBILITY.
