Narrative:

1 min after liftoff, lead flight attendant notified us of a smoke alarm and strong smell of smoke or fumes filling cabin. We turned downwind and made a decision to land immediately. All FAA and company procedures were followed. I checked engine gauges and all looked normal. We completed our landing checklist, notified tower (they had emergency equipment standing by). Flight attendants briefed as to time left till landing and evacuate/evacuation procedures. We had tower notify our company we were coming back with a problem. After landing, the first officer got on the PA and told everyone to stay seated, that we'd deplane at the gate. The smoke or fumes at that time were lessening, and tower did not see any outward signs of smoke. We deplaned in a quick, orderly fashion. No injuries to people or equipment. Aircraft was written up in maintenance log as to what happened and maintenance took over then.
