Narrative:

I was the captain on a scheduled part 121 flight from mke to pit. When we were ready to taxi, ground cleared us to taxi to runway 19R. We taxied north on taxiway 'a,' crossed runway 13/31, and continued north on taxiway 'G' ('a' becomes 'G'). As we taxied, we did the before takeoff checklist. As we continued north on 'G,' and passed 'gg,' I noticed an airplane on final for runway 25R. I abruptly stopped the airplane short of his flight path. Had I not done this, the small airplane could have conceivably hit my tail. The small airplane landed, and when tower cleared us onto runway 19R. I questioned the controller as to whether or not I had missed a hold short line. (I questioned him because I was sure I had not). He replied that he would look into it. Activity at the airport was very light. I am sure I did not miss an illuminated hold short sign, and there should be one placed there. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter states it had just gotten dark and he remembers an illuminated noise abatement sign, no hold lines or signs. Feels sure if he had not stopped when he saw small aircraft that tail of aircraft would have been struck. Thinks there should be hold lines and signs just north of gg taxiway. Tower never got back to him reference his question. The traffic had just become very quiet and there were pressure problems.

Title: TAXIING ACR STOPS AS HE SEES SMA ON APCH. IF TAXI CONTINUED TO ASSIGNED RWY SMA COULD HAVE HIT TAIL.

Narrative: I WAS THE CAPT ON A SCHEDULED PART 121 FLT FROM MKE TO PIT. WHEN WE WERE READY TO TAXI, GND CLRED US TO TAXI TO RWY 19R. WE TAXIED N ON TAXIWAY 'A,' CROSSED RWY 13/31, AND CONTINUED N ON TAXIWAY 'G' ('A' BECOMES 'G'). AS WE TAXIED, WE DID THE BEFORE TKOF CHKLIST. AS WE CONTINUED N ON 'G,' AND PASSED 'GG,' I NOTICED AN AIRPLANE ON FINAL FOR RWY 25R. I ABRUPTLY STOPPED THE AIRPLANE SHORT OF HIS FLT PATH. HAD I NOT DONE THIS, THE SMALL AIRPLANE COULD HAVE CONCEIVABLY HIT MY TAIL. THE SMALL AIRPLANE LANDED, AND WHEN TWR CLRED US ONTO RWY 19R. I QUESTIONED THE CTLR AS TO WHETHER OR NOT I HAD MISSED A HOLD SHORT LINE. (I QUESTIONED HIM BECAUSE I WAS SURE I HAD NOT). HE REPLIED THAT HE WOULD LOOK INTO IT. ACTIVITY AT THE ARPT WAS VERY LIGHT. I AM SURE I DID NOT MISS AN ILLUMINATED HOLD SHORT SIGN, AND THERE SHOULD BE ONE PLACED THERE. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: RPTR STATES IT HAD JUST GOTTEN DARK AND HE REMEMBERS AN ILLUMINATED NOISE ABATEMENT SIGN, NO HOLD LINES OR SIGNS. FEELS SURE IF HE HAD NOT STOPPED WHEN HE SAW SMA THAT TAIL OF ACFT WOULD HAVE BEEN STRUCK. THINKS THERE SHOULD BE HOLD LINES AND SIGNS JUST N OF GG TAXIWAY. TWR NEVER GOT BACK TO HIM REF HIS QUESTION. THE TFC HAD JUST BECOME VERY QUIET AND THERE WERE PRESSURE PROBLEMS.
