Narrative:

Climbing from bermuda VOR and radar control we were deviating due to numerous thunderstorms. At approximately 18000, bermuda control advised us only altitudes available were FL270 or FL350. We requested FL350 as a final. Passing through FL315, bermuda control told us to maintain FL310 and turn to a heading of 360 degrees from heading of 320 degrees. We immediately complied with ATC's request. Bermuda control gave us instructions to climb to FL350. We asked what the problem was and bermuda control said our clearance was to climb to FL310 and expect FL350. We asked if there was a conflict with other traffic. Bermuda control replied there was no problem and no report was necessary. Contributing factors were bermuda controller was talking too fast and we missed the instruction, also WX was factor, were very busy deviating numerous thunderstorms. Factor affecting human performance was that I was a new captain receiving initial operating experience on a new aircraft from a check pilot and crew coordination is not as good as it should be.

Narrative: CLBING FROM BERMUDA VOR AND RADAR CTL WE WERE DEVIATING DUE TO NUMEROUS TSTMS. AT APPROX 18000, BERMUDA CTL ADVISED US ONLY ALTS AVAILABLE WERE FL270 OR FL350. WE REQUESTED FL350 AS A FINAL. PASSING THROUGH FL315, BERMUDA CTL TOLD US TO MAINTAIN FL310 AND TURN TO A HDG OF 360 DEGS FROM HDG OF 320 DEGS. WE IMMEDIATELY COMPLIED WITH ATC'S REQUEST. BERMUDA CTL GAVE US INSTRUCTIONS TO CLB TO FL350. WE ASKED WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS AND BERMUDA CTL SAID OUR CLRNC WAS TO CLB TO FL310 AND EXPECT FL350. WE ASKED IF THERE WAS A CONFLICT WITH OTHER TFC. BERMUDA CTL REPLIED THERE WAS NO PROBLEM AND NO RPT WAS NECESSARY. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS WERE BERMUDA CTLR WAS TALKING TOO FAST AND WE MISSED THE INSTRUCTION, ALSO WX WAS FACTOR, WERE VERY BUSY DEVIATING NUMEROUS TSTMS. FACTOR AFFECTING HUMAN PERFORMANCE WAS THAT I WAS A NEW CAPT RECEIVING INITIAL OPERATING EXPERIENCE ON A NEW ACFT FROM A CHK PLT AND CREW COORD IS NOT AS GOOD AS IT SHOULD BE.
