Narrative:

The flight this night was uneventful until we landed on runway 17 at the brownwood airport. We landed approximately 1000 ft from the approach end of the runway and were decelerating when I saw 2 deer come into the view of our lights. The deer were moving left to right. The first deer was positioned on the right side of the centerline and continued off the right side of the pavement. The second deer started on the left edge of the pavement, hesitated, then made an effort to cross with its friend. This deer's path crossed with the path of our left propeller at approximately 2000 ft from the approach end of the runway. The aircraft speed was approximately 90 KTS and I felt a jolt on the left side of the aircraft. I told the copilot to taxi clear of the runway where we completed the after landing checklist. We taxied to the gate and shut the right engine down. The left engine had stopped turning after hitting the deer. If deer cannot be kept clear of airports at night, airplanes should have deer whistles mounted to them to help scare the deer away. Also high beam, longer distance landing lights might have helped to see the deer while we were still in the air.

Title: COMMUTER ACFT HITS DEER LNDG AT BWD, TX.

Narrative: THE FLT THIS NIGHT WAS UNEVENTFUL UNTIL WE LANDED ON RWY 17 AT THE BROWNWOOD ARPT. WE LANDED APPROX 1000 FT FROM THE APCH END OF THE RWY AND WERE DECELERATING WHEN I SAW 2 DEER COME INTO THE VIEW OF OUR LIGHTS. THE DEER WERE MOVING L TO R. THE FIRST DEER WAS POSITIONED ON THE R SIDE OF THE CTRLINE AND CONTINUED OFF THE R SIDE OF THE PAVEMENT. THE SECOND DEER STARTED ON THE L EDGE OF THE PAVEMENT, HESITATED, THEN MADE AN EFFORT TO CROSS WITH ITS FRIEND. THIS DEER'S PATH CROSSED WITH THE PATH OF OUR L PROP AT APPROX 2000 FT FROM THE APCH END OF THE RWY. THE ACFT SPD WAS APPROX 90 KTS AND I FELT A JOLT ON THE L SIDE OF THE ACFT. I TOLD THE COPLT TO TAXI CLR OF THE RWY WHERE WE COMPLETED THE AFTER LNDG CHKLIST. WE TAXIED TO THE GATE AND SHUT THE R ENG DOWN. THE L ENG HAD STOPPED TURNING AFTER HITTING THE DEER. IF DEER CANNOT BE KEPT CLR OF ARPTS AT NIGHT, AIRPLANES SHOULD HAVE DEER WHISTLES MOUNTED TO THEM TO HELP SCARE THE DEER AWAY. ALSO HIGH BEAM, LONGER DISTANCE LNDG LIGHTS MIGHT HAVE HELPED TO SEE THE DEER WHILE WE WERE STILL IN THE AIR.
