Narrative:

Was on a pleasure flight from apv to bfl, ca. Made contact with riverside FSS on 122.2 as directed on los angeles sectional to check activity status of special military activity area in that area. FSS asked for name of area but I had been unable to locate a name prior to or during the flight. I requested status for that area which extends over the lake hughes VOR by naming that VOR. FSS said that if I couldn't name it, they couldn't help me. At the end of flight I showed sectional to 1 CFI and 1 more experienced pilot and asked if they could find a name of this area on the sectional chart. They couldn't name it either. Next day I showed sectional to 2 pilots and 2 more CFI's. The 2 pilots and 1 CFI couldn't provide an answer. Third CFI explained that the name of the special military activity area was the same as the training route number. The apparent name of this area is 'IR200,' and I should have requested information for this area by reference to the training route number. Although the top of the chart had references to special military activity, it was vague on how my request should have been made. Perhaps next publication of this chart could provide some direction on how to make the request or how to obtain the name of the area. Assistance was received from edwards approach as indicated on same sectional.

Narrative: WAS ON A PLEASURE FLT FROM APV TO BFL, CA. MADE CONTACT WITH RIVERSIDE FSS ON 122.2 AS DIRECTED ON LOS ANGELES SECTIONAL TO CHK ACTIVITY STATUS OF SPECIAL MIL ACTIVITY AREA IN THAT AREA. FSS ASKED FOR NAME OF AREA BUT I HAD BEEN UNABLE TO LOCATE A NAME PRIOR TO OR DURING THE FLT. I REQUESTED STATUS FOR THAT AREA WHICH EXTENDS OVER THE LAKE HUGHES VOR BY NAMING THAT VOR. FSS SAID THAT IF I COULDN'T NAME IT, THEY COULDN'T HELP ME. AT THE END OF FLT I SHOWED SECTIONAL TO 1 CFI AND 1 MORE EXPERIENCED PLT AND ASKED IF THEY COULD FIND A NAME OF THIS AREA ON THE SECTIONAL CHART. THEY COULDN'T NAME IT EITHER. NEXT DAY I SHOWED SECTIONAL TO 2 PLTS AND 2 MORE CFI'S. THE 2 PLTS AND 1 CFI COULDN'T PROVIDE AN ANSWER. THIRD CFI EXPLAINED THAT THE NAME OF THE SPECIAL MIL ACTIVITY AREA WAS THE SAME AS THE TRAINING RTE NUMBER. THE APPARENT NAME OF THIS AREA IS 'IR200,' AND I SHOULD HAVE REQUESTED INFO FOR THIS AREA BY REF TO THE TRAINING RTE NUMBER. ALTHOUGH THE TOP OF THE CHART HAD REFS TO SPECIAL MIL ACTIVITY, IT WAS VAGUE ON HOW MY REQUEST SHOULD HAVE BEEN MADE. PERHAPS NEXT PUBLICATION OF THIS CHART COULD PROVIDE SOME DIRECTION ON HOW TO MAKE THE REQUEST OR HOW TO OBTAIN THE NAME OF THE AREA. ASSISTANCE WAS RECEIVED FROM EDWARDS APCH AS INDICATED ON SAME SECTIONAL.
