Narrative:

I descended below 2300 ft MSL before reaching bryin intersection on the localizer back course runway 16 cll. I descended to 920 ft MSL where the altitude would have been 2300 ft MSL. This occurred because I mistakenly thought I had crossed bryin. Center informed tower and tower informed me. I began an immediate climb but crossed bryin within about 20 seconds. I need to determine which side the #2 VOR CDI is on before and after the fix during my approach briefing. I thought I saw the CDI go to the center of the indicator, showing that I was crossing bryin, but was mistaken. A DME distance from cll VOR to bryin might make this mistake less likely if it were on the approach plate. It would make it easier to fix bryin on the approach.

Title: CPR SMA PLT MISREADS INST ON IAP BACK COURSE LOC APCH AND DSNDS PREMATURELY. ALT XING RESTRICTION NOT MET IN ALTDEV ALT EXCURSION.

Narrative: I DSNDED BELOW 2300 FT MSL BEFORE REACHING BRYIN INTXN ON THE LOC BACK COURSE RWY 16 CLL. I DSNDED TO 920 FT MSL WHERE THE ALT WOULD HAVE BEEN 2300 FT MSL. THIS OCCURRED BECAUSE I MISTAKENLY THOUGHT I HAD CROSSED BRYIN. CTR INFORMED TWR AND TWR INFORMED ME. I BEGAN AN IMMEDIATE CLB BUT CROSSED BRYIN WITHIN ABOUT 20 SECONDS. I NEED TO DETERMINE WHICH SIDE THE #2 VOR CDI IS ON BEFORE AND AFTER THE FIX DURING MY APCH BRIEFING. I THOUGHT I SAW THE CDI GO TO THE CTR OF THE INDICATOR, SHOWING THAT I WAS XING BRYIN, BUT WAS MISTAKEN. A DME DISTANCE FROM CLL VOR TO BRYIN MIGHT MAKE THIS MISTAKE LESS LIKELY IF IT WERE ON THE APCH PLATE. IT WOULD MAKE IT EASIER TO FIX BRYIN ON THE APCH.
