Narrative:

On takeoff, I heard a mechanical grinding noise. I could not find source of the noise so I aborted the takeoff (at 85 KTS). Tower reported fire in #1 engine and so we shut down the engine. We called for the emergency vehicles. The firemen reported no fire and so we decided to taxi to the gate. As we prepared to taxi the firemen reported that there was a fire in the #1 engine. I stopped the aircraft and evacuate/evacuationed the airplane. The emergency vehicles were very prompt in their arrival at the aircraft, but clrer communication between them, the tower, and us might have prevented the need to evacuate/evacuation.
