Narrative:

In securing a clearance to hzd I asked for a WX briefing to 'huntingdon/carroll county.' the briefer at bna checked the identifier and said M13. I told him I thought it was hzd. I looked at the chart and saw hzd was the identifier for the NDB at huntingdon/carroll county. I thought they had changed the identifier for the airport to avoid confusion between an airport identifier and the NAVAID. I filed for M13 and received a clearance to M13 huntingdon from ATC at jwn. In route discussion with ATC it appeared neither of us was sure what the correct identifier was or which airport was which. The IFR chart should not show huntingdon/carroll county (hzd) or it's name. There is too much chance of confusion with huntingdon (M13) a non IFR airport about 10 mi south. Also the NDB and the airport should have different names. Copies of the charts are attached. The flight was in VFR conditions and the error was corrected en route with no problem. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information. Reporter states confusion occurs because huntingdon is name of NDB and also of a different airport from where NDB located. Some charts refer to huntingdon carroll county airport, sectional and approach plate use only the name carroll county. Reporter suggestion is to change name of other airport or NDB to conform to airport name where located. Analyst counseled that NAVAID located at airport may have same identifier as airport. When located away from airport identify is not the same.

Title: FSS BRIEFER PULLED UP WRONG THREE LETTER CODE FOR DEST ARPT. CLRNC CONFUSED AS CLRED TO WRONG ARPT.

Narrative: IN SECURING A CLRNC TO HZD I ASKED FOR A WX BRIEFING TO 'HUNTINGDON/CARROLL COUNTY.' THE BRIEFER AT BNA CHKED THE IDENTIFIER AND SAID M13. I TOLD HIM I THOUGHT IT WAS HZD. I LOOKED AT THE CHART AND SAW HZD WAS THE IDENTIFIER FOR THE NDB AT HUNTINGDON/CARROLL COUNTY. I THOUGHT THEY HAD CHANGED THE IDENTIFIER FOR THE ARPT TO AVOID CONFUSION BTWN AN ARPT IDENTIFIER AND THE NAVAID. I FILED FOR M13 AND RECEIVED A CLRNC TO M13 HUNTINGDON FROM ATC AT JWN. IN RTE DISCUSSION WITH ATC IT APPEARED NEITHER OF US WAS SURE WHAT THE CORRECT IDENTIFIER WAS OR WHICH ARPT WAS WHICH. THE IFR CHART SHOULD NOT SHOW HUNTINGDON/CARROLL COUNTY (HZD) OR IT'S NAME. THERE IS TOO MUCH CHANCE OF CONFUSION WITH HUNTINGDON (M13) A NON IFR ARPT ABOUT 10 MI S. ALSO THE NDB AND THE ARPT SHOULD HAVE DIFFERENT NAMES. COPIES OF THE CHARTS ARE ATTACHED. THE FLT WAS IN VFR CONDITIONS AND THE ERROR WAS CORRECTED ENRTE WITH NO PROB. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO. RPTR STATES CONFUSION OCCURS BECAUSE HUNTINGDON IS NAME OF NDB AND ALSO OF A DIFFERENT ARPT FROM WHERE NDB LOCATED. SOME CHARTS REFER TO HUNTINGDON CARROLL COUNTY ARPT, SECTIONAL AND APCH PLATE USE ONLY THE NAME CARROLL COUNTY. RPTR SUGGESTION IS TO CHANGE NAME OF OTHER ARPT OR NDB TO CONFORM TO ARPT NAME WHERE LOCATED. ANALYST COUNSELED THAT NAVAID LOCATED AT ARPT MAY HAVE SAME IDENTIFIER AS ARPT. WHEN LOCATED AWAY FROM ARPT IDENT IS NOT THE SAME.
