Narrative:

Level at 16000 ft after departure from lga air carrier X was receiving departure vectors from center controller. Observed traffic indicated on TCASII and heard the aural traffic warning. Aircraft was converging from below. TCASII RA then commanded a 1500 FPM climb. Pitched the aircraft to approximately 1800 FPM and left ATC assigned altitude of 16000 ft. TCASII reported clear of conflict at approximately 17300 ft. The captain advised ATC of the TCASII event. The controller reassigned us 17000 ft, continued normally to destination. Looks like ATC error, but the controller didn't seem too concerned. Probably would have been much different outcome if not for TCASII. Never received ATC advisory of traffic. Supplemental information from acn 207201: TCASII showed 600 ft below and 1 mi to my left.
