Narrative:

We were cleared to back taxi from taxiway hotel into position on runway 36. On making the 180 degree turn at the end of the runway, the nosewheel went off into the grass. I backed the aircraft up and continued the turn to line up on the runway. I saw no evidence of damage and the aircraft turned and taxied normally. My first officer asked if I thought we should go back to the gate. I told him it appeared normal and we would continue. Flight to pit was normal. Upon arrival pit we had maintenance check the nose gear. There was a lower piece of the spray deflector broken off. Maintenance advised it was secure and okay for service. We also advised the crew receiving the aircraft as to what had happened. Note: runway 36 at sbn is 100 ft wide, and area to back taxi for full length appears to be somewhat smaller.
